Grief is also artistic director of La Jolla Playhouse's two stages, which are composed of the main 499-seat theatre, where Rent is playing its SRO engagement and the 399-seat second stage. But it was weird." He quickly added, "A nice weird."Ĭruz says the person most helpful in getting his performance right is director Michael Grief, who directed Rent Off-Broadway and in its acclaimed move to Broadway, where the show won the 1996 Tony for Best Musical. Then I realized I'd done something to make them feel something. I didn't think I deserved their applause. "I had no idea," he said, "what being on stage would be like or how I'd react to the applause. The audience response has been overwhelming."īut, his first night in front of an audience, Cruz was was a bit taken aback. Playing Angel has been a great learning experience. "It didn't take long to embrace the role," explained Cruz, "and, surprise, I didn't have a problem with the heels. I kept thinking 'What am I doing? What makes this me think I can do this?' For a while, I was in a mess."Īt first, Cruz said he thought he'd have a problem being comfortable with the role, then with having to dance in high-heel platform shoes. "I had seen the show in New York and had such a deep respect for Wilson Jermaine Heredia's performance. "It's been wonderful and, at the same time, I can't explain the nervousness I went through in the beginning," said Cruz. Cruz is making his legit stage debut in the musical's Angel Company, which premiered in July, 1997 at the San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse. Playing Angel, the street musician and drag queen dying of AIDS, in Rent has been a wonderful experience for 23-year-old Wilson Cruz. The game picked up a cult following but in our 5/10 review, IGN said: "Lollipop Chainsaw doesn’t even attempt to differentiate itself from the genre, and most of what it does try new in the realm of its characters and writing ultimately ends up taking away from an incredible-on-paper action game. The game was a collaboartion between No More Heroes' Suda51 and James Gunn, who'd go on to direct Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. Lollipop Chainsaw is a hack and slash action game in which high school cheerleader Juliet Starling must fight through hoards of zombies using the game's titular chainsaw (and with her boyfriend's severed, still-living head attached to her belt). Added to other enhancements like Auto HDR and your previously owned catalog of games many of which are included in your Xbox Game Pass membership FPS Boost brings. Lollipop Chainsaw はドラガミゲームスで復活させます。楽しみに待っていてください…!!! Lollipop Chainsaw is back by Dragami Games. Now introducing FPS Boost, an enhancement added to previously released backward compatible titles to help boost framerates to nearly double that of their original. The original doesn't exist outside of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 hardware, as it lacks a PC version and isn't available through any form of backwards compatibility. Yasuda didn't share further details on the nature of the game - whether it's a sequel, remake, remaster, reimagining or anything else - but it would be the first chance for players to try the franchise in more than a decade. Please look forward to it." The veteran developer was previously CEO of Kadokawa Games (who published the original in 2012) but left to start Dragami Games in May 2022. As spotted by Siliconera, Yoshimi Yasuda said simply: "Lollipop Chainsaw is back by Dragami Games. While limbs regenerate over time, health must be siphoned from enemies. Rick will show several levels of damage to his body as he is attacked and hurt featuring anything from exposed ribs to a missing arm. Through the gameplay, players spill and collect gallons of blood and splatter from enemy characters, and this blood works as currency to purchase upgrades to weapons, attack combos, more health, and the like. Rick also has several finishing moves at his disposal, which can be activated when beaten enemy characters feature a red halo around their body. Rick can still pick up various weapons and items, and even turns parts of his body into a weapon once the abilities are unlocked. Over two dozen combos and special attacks are available for players to unlock and master adding new levels of variety and depth to the beat-em-up formula. Two buttons are used for punching, another for grappling, and there are "modifier" buttons which add sprint options and mix up the "standard" attacks. Like the previous entries, players work their way through horror-themed environments inside a creepy mansion with boss battles at the end of each stage.Īll of these features remain in the HD revamp, but there are several levels of depth added. In the classic games, Rick's primary attack was to punch enemies with some kicking involved, and occasionally picking up crude weapons, such as a 2x4 piece of wood. And like previous entries in the series, Rick is transformed into a hulking beast of a man when he puts on the Terror Mask. Like the previous classic entries in the series, Splatterhouse is a beat-em-up style action game in a horror setting. The Splatterhouse franchise rises from the dead in this new high-definition revamp! The new Splatterhouse is not a sequel, but rather a re-telling of the original story following poor battered hero Rick as he dons the Terror Mask and works his way through hordes of demons, monsters, and other beasties to save his girlfriend, Jennifer, from the mysterious and evil Dr. Forspoken’s Thrilling Combat Is Limited by Control and Camera Problems However, that’s another area where the game struggles to make all its great ideas work together. Ideally, Forspoken’s gameplay would carry the weight and make those storytelling struggles more of an aside in the grand scheme of the adventure. At the very least, the lore and side stories of Athia started to come into focus a bit more clearly as the game progressed, which is really when I found myself compelled to see what will happen next. For what it’s worth, Frey certainly seemed to warm up a bit in the later portions of the demo. Of course, that makes it even more annoying that many of those characters and stories are presented through Frey’s “whatever” filter.Īgain, I only saw a relatively small portion of Forspoken (this game feels massive), so I can’t fairly comment on whether or not the Frey issues remain a problem throughout the game. Most of the side characters also feel fully developed and often steal the show. Athia clearly has a rich history that we gradually begin to uncover via side activities, environmental details, and traditional story sequences. While I didn’t have time to participate in many of the side activities the game offers, the storylines I did get to participate in were all engaging. The biggest problem with that approach is that Athia’s lore, history, and world-building are all genuinely fascinating. Frey occasionally brushes aside the armor of her aggressively street-smart persona to allow herself to get swept up in the majesty of the mystical, but her enthusiasm too often fuels some kind of “let’s show them how we do it in New York” (not an actual line) bit of dialog. I’m not sure why there are suddenly so many people who are hesitant to embrace and enjoy a fantasy world, but I would much rather have a character who is impressed by magic than one who feels the need to comment about how tired and cliche that magic is. The only people who have previously been exposed to this many ill-advised uses of the word “fuck” are pre-teen boys who just learned about the word “fuck” and can’t wait to use it at every possible opportunity.įrey is sometimes one of those “too cool for all of this” protagonists that we see more and more of in genre works. I can’t emphasize how jarring that last aspect is. 90% of their dialog (at the very least) consists of rapid-fire jokes of varying quality and an almost unfathomable amount of curse words. Look, humor is subjective, but Frey and her companion’s constant series of quips quickly become grating. Maybe there’s some truth to some of that, but when you get down to it, the biggest problems with Frey come down to her role in this game and her dialog. Others have speculated that the team may simply be struggling to write a female protagonist. Some have speculated that the problems with Frey may be attributed to Forspoken developer Luminous Productions’ (a studio that largely consists of former Final Fantasy XV team members) attempts to capture very specific ideas of Western culture. While she naturally warms up to both a bit over the course of the handful of chapters I got to play, her sometimes seemingly faux-tough demeanor and desire to turn nearly everything that happens into some kind of comedy bit remained all too present. She’s officially described as a reluctant hero, though her reluctance often comes in the form of quips, awkward curse-filled tirades, and other reminders that she doesn’t especially want to be in this place or with these people. When Common’s smooth-talking security enforcer ominously says, “We all work for the good of the silo,” for viewers who actually do have the option of going outside, it’s reason to consider how well a plodding exercise like “Silo” really works for the good of us. The inherent mystery here, however, feels stretched to the point of strained, exacerbated by characters that don’t consistently pop. (As a footnote, the dystopian backdrop has a close cousin in “Black Knight,” a South Korean series premiering on Netflix in May, so there’s a lot of that going around.) That does foster suspense about what’s actually outside, but it doesn’t do a whole lot to propel the audience through this season, much less stoke excitement for another.īuilding this sort of elaborate world takes some time, and the inherent warnings about authoritarianism and blindly trusting the government give the series a certain real-world resonance. While the 10-episode season begins with a fair amount of momentum, featuring Rashida Jones and David Oyelowo at the outset, forward progress pretty quickly slows to a crawl. That includes rules about who gets to procreate in an effort to sustain and protect this society’s limited resources. Her investigation doesn’t sit well with the bureaucratic figures running the place (Tim Robbins and Common key among them), who clearly know more than they’re sharing with the population in an effort to keep the silo’s residents docile and manageable. Rashida Jones and David Oyelowo in the premiere episode of "Silo." Rekha Garton/Apple TV+ “We do not know who built the silo” and “We do not know when it will be safe to go outside” are part of the mantra repeated by those living in this confined space, who only know that the domicile was built more than 100 years earlier and that it’s likely certain death if they’re forced to “clean,” or venture outside into what appears to be a forbidding wasteland.īased on the book series by Hugh Howey, the series inspires comparisons to cinematic visions of a world where those in authority aren’t sharing everything with its populace, from “Soylent Green” (was that really a half-century ago?) to “Snowpiercer,” another series (after the movie) boxed in by the parameters of its premise.Īdapted by producer Graham Yost (“Justified”), “Silo” boasts an impressive cast, and exhibits a willingness to introduce and then shed major characters.Īt its core is Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson), a technical genius who keeps the silo’s life-support systems functioning, who begins asking probing and uncomfortable questions after a personal loss involving a mysterious death. Apple TV+ has taken some big sci-fi bets (see “Foundation”), but despite its provocative themes this series inspires a little too much curiosity about when and how to find the exit. “Silo” is an unfortunately apt name for a series that feels as if it’s slowly spinning in circles, set in another dystopian future where the lingering remnants of humankind grapple with how they got there and what they do next. For us, it’s way to formal and just…well…unnatural. It’s one of the first things you learn to say, and for some reason, many don’t ever try other greetings.
